Thread

March 9th, 2012

“Mommy, we forgot to mend my Rapunzel doll today . . .” Abby started as I helped her get into bed.
“I know sweetie. We got busy doing so many fun things and we forgot. I can take her now and mend her while you sleep.”
“Hmmm . . .” she said with deliberation, “let me think about that.”

We snuggled for a few minutes and she passed over the doll. “Can you bring her back soon?” she said. “I’ll still be awake.”

The bow on the dress was coming off and her plush doll hair was unravelling in the back. Just minor surgery. As I sat mending her doll, I glanced up and the spool of thread caught my eye.

I’ve almost used the whole spool of thread.

In some odd way, that resonated with me. I bet I’ve had this same spool of white thread since I got married almost 11 years ago. And I’m not one to sew my own clothes or make quilts, I just replace buttons and mend tears. How many things had I mended? repaired? Enough to use up a whole spool of thread.

Maybe little things like this matter to you. Or maybe you think I should get a grip and add white thread to my shopping list. But it made me smile as I tied off the knot and laid the mended Rapunzel doll next to my sleeping little girl.

2011 Newborn & Baby Favorites

March 3rd, 2012

Newborn and baby sessions are increasingly becoming my favorite kinds of sessions. Maybe that’s because I have little ones at home. I love how sleepy and tiny newborns are. I love the big round eyes that toddlers have. It’s so rewarding to play with a little kid and get a genuine laugh with camera in hand to catch it.

It’s also amazingly challenging to take newborn pictures that have the clean-edge professional touch. They look so simple, but yikes!! That simplicity takes some serious practice. I can clearly recall the first set of newborn photos I took. Oh-my-goodness. Super humbling. But it’s also so encouraging to look at where I have been and it helps me appreciate where I am now – and also where I may be in a few more years as I’m always challenging myself to grow.

This weekend I had the joy of participating in a newborn photography workshop with professional photographer Sandy Puc. I’m so excited to try out some of the methods and tips she demonstrated and seeing the impact the workshop has on my images. If you are pregnant, or have friends who are pregnant, please ask me about my newborn sessions!!

2011 Favorites

February 18th, 2012

I don’t know about you, but for me, January and February means a lot of cleaning out and organizing. Somehow the beginning of the new year, putting Christmas decorations back in storage and needing to fill out tax forms helps me get motivated to get a few more things squared away too.

Yesterday I re-organized my pantry. Although my pantry probably gets crazier faster than others since my two little girls like to play “shopping.” I actually hear them checking out and giving each other play money for a bag of food. I’ve also done some painting, thoroughly cleaned the bathrooms, and went through all the piles on my desk.

I’m still cleaning up files on my computer, and like I do each January, I moved last year’s sessions off my main hard drive into a back-up vault for safe keeping. As I do this, I inevitably spend time looking at photos, smiling, and thinking that time goes by way too quickly.

Anyway, before these go into the vault, I thought I’d share some of my favorite photos from 2011. There’s a little bit of everything mixed in – family, senior, maternity and wedding. Everyone is so cute — I couldn’t help posting a lot! In fact, I think I’ll have to do a totally separate post for the 2011 babies and newborn as I scoot those over to the vault later this month.
